- 01 / 11QS University Rankings for BRICS: In the latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) BRICS University rankings two Indian Universities have been listed among the top 10 universities across Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. With 300 varsities in the list including the Tsinghua University in China that has topped the list, many Indian varsities have managed to enter the top 100 in the list. These top Indian varsities include the IITs, IISc, state universities and others. The BRICS ranking has been compiled using eight different indicators, including the ratio of faculty to students, the proportion of academic staff with a PhD and the institution’s reputation among academics and employers. While the BRICS list is spearate, here we feature the top 10 Indian varsities in the list of 100 that was revealed by QS World University ranking for BRICS nations (Overall BRICS rank is given within brackets):
02 / 111. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (Rank-9): Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came as Roubles from the then Soviet Union. In 1961 Parliament decreed the IITs as ‘Institutes of National Importance'. Since then, IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world. The institute saw an increase in its rank from 13 in 2017 to 8 in 2018.

Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (Rank-10): The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that will work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution. The ranking of the institute saw a fall from 6 in 2017 to 10 in 2018.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (Rank-17): Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the seven Institutes of Technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India. Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared an Institution of National Importance under the \"Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963\" and was renamed \"Indian Institute of Technology Delhi\". The institute saw a fall in its ranking from 15 in 2017 to 17 in 2018.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (Rank- 18): Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The ranking of the varsity increased from 19 in 2017 to 18 in 2018.
06 / 115. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (Rank-21): Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradeshthe, India and was established in 1959. The institution is considered one the IITs most famous universities for pioneering science-based engineering education in the country. The ranking of the institute increased from 22 in 2017 to 21 in 2018.
07 / 116. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (Rank 24): The Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur is the first of the sixteen Institutes established in the IIT system. Established in 1951, IIT Kharagpur stands tall for its excellence in Academics and Research with top class faculty. The institute saw a jump in its ranking from 25 in 2017 to 24 in 2018.
08 / 117. University of Delhi (Rank-41): The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. The University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly. This is the only Indian varsity whose ranking in both 2017 and 2018 were recorded to be the same.
09 / 118. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (Rank-51): The ranking of the instite has seem a sharp fall from 39 in 2017 to 51 in 2018.
10 / 119. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (Rank-52): Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments. The ranking of the varsity increased from 54 in 2017 to 52 in 2018.
11 / 1110. University of Calcutta (Rank-64): In July 1854, the Court of Directors of the East India Company sent a 'despatch' to the Governor General of India in Council suggesting the establishment of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. In pursuance of the despatch, the University of Calcutta was founded on January 24,1857 by the incorporation of an Act of the Legislative Council.
